Complications in the Dental Practice -
A Panel Discussion Covering the Difficulties that we all Face.

Description: Complications affect all of us in all forms of dental practice. At times it is hard to solve dilemmas that we are faced with, without support from multiple fields of practice. This 2.5 hour discussion will look at different complications that can start when the patient first contacts our offices and sets up an appointment. Diagnostic and treatment complications are often encountered and may be difficult to predict but can always be dealt with in different ways. At times, patient management is the solution to many of our difficulties. This panel discussion will endeavor to answer attendee questions (submitted in advance) as well as bring to light some of the issues that we face on a regular basis.

Bio:

Dr. Izchak Barzilay received his DDS from the University of Toronto in 1983, a Certificate in Prosthodontics from the Eastman Dental Center in Rochester, NY in 1986, and MS from the University of Rochester in 1991. He is Head of the Division of Prosthodontics and Restorative Dentistry, Mt. Sinai Hospital, Toronto, Ont.; Head- Prosthodontics, Bridge to Health Medical and Dental; Adjunct Professor, Division of Prosthodontics of the Eastman Department of Dentistry, University of Rochester, Rochester, NY; Professor, George Brown College of Applied Arts and Technology, Toronto, ON; Associate in Dentistry, University of Toronto, Toronto, Ont.; Chief Examiner in Prosthodontics – Royal College of Dentists of Canada; Past - President of the Association of Prosthodontists of Canada: Past President - Ontario Study Club for Osseointegration.; Advisory Board - International Society for Digital Dentistry; Medical Advisory Board Member – Sjogren’s Society of Canada; Publication reviewer for Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry, and is in private practice limited to prosthodontics and implant dentistry in Toronto, Ont. Dr. Barzilay holds many fellowships in prestigious organizations and has been awarded multiple awards for his research and teaching accomplishments.

Dr. Effie Habsha received her Bachelor of Science degree and earned her DDS degree from the University of Toronto. Upon graduation, she completed a one year General Practice Residency at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, ON. Dr. Habsha received her Diploma in Prosthodontics and Master of Science degree, both from the University of Toronto. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada (RCDC) and is an examiner and Section Head for the Oral Examination in Prosthodontics for the RCDC. Dr. Habsha is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Department of Dentistry, Eastman Institute for Oral Health at the University of Rochester Medical Center. She has served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto and currently instructs both at the undergraduate and graduate level in Prosthodontics at U of T. Dr. Habsha is a Professor at George Brown College of Applied Arts and Technology and is the On-staff Prosthodontist at MedCan clinic in Toronto. She holds an appointment as Staff Prosthodontist at Mount Sinai Hospital where she instructs the dental residents and is involved in various clinical research projects. Dr. Habsha is an Associate Fellow of the Academy of Prosthodontics and Greater New York Academy of Prosthodontics and a Fellow of The Pierre Fauchard Academy and holds memberships in numerous Prosthodontic organizations and societies. She lectures both nationally and internationally on various Prosthodontic topics and maintains a private practice limited to Prosthodontics and Implant Dentistry in Toronto.

Dr. Elahe Behrooz obtained her first DDS degree in Iran and her Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Eric Sprott School of Business, Carleton University. She obtained her second DDS degree from the University of Toronto (U of T) with honors and is a graduate of the Prosthodontic program at the U of T. She is currently involved in private practice limited to Prosthodontics and implant dentistry, is a clinical instructor at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto in the Graduate Prosthodontics department, is the chief of clinical operations of the Build Your Smile Dental Foundation (Domestic) and a clinical associate at the department of Dentistry, Mt Sinai Hospital.

Dr. Mahmood Abu Ruja is a clinician-scientist in the field of Prosthodontics, with over 10 years of experience as a clinician and a lecturer in Prosthodontics. He received his dental degree from The University of Jordan in 2006. He completed his MSc in Prosthodontics and Ph.D. in Dental materials at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto. Dr. Abu Ruja’s research explored topics related to dental materials, Zirconia bonding and surface treatment, and complications of dental implants. He received many national and international awards for his research. Dr. Abu Ruja is currently an instructor in Prosthodontics at the University of Toronto and maintains a private practice limited to Prosthodontics. He enjoys spending his free time with family and friends.

Dr. Parvaneh Bahrami obtained her Master of Science in Periodontology and Implant Surgery in 2012 from the University of Toronto.Dr. Bahrami is board-certified in Canada and USA and a Diplomat of the American Academy of Periodontology. She is a clinical instructor at the University of Toronto and practices as a periodontist and implant surgeon at Prosthodontics Associates.

Dr. Amir Azarpazhooh is an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Dentistry, and Faculty of Medicine. He is also the Head of Endodontics at the Department of Dentistry, Mount Sinai Hospital. His research interests include relationships between evidence-based dentistry and clinical decision-making, patient-centered care, and eliciting patient preferences in clinical decision-making.

His daily practice is limited to implant dentistry from single implants to full mouth rehabilitation utilizing all on x treatment. Including same day loading protocols, including the use of zygomatic and pterygoid implants. He routinely takes on difficult failures that require thinking outside the box for solutions. He has placed thousands of implants over the last decade and understands the challenges that come with difficult or failing cases. His understanding of both restorative and surgery allows for a comprehensive approach. His ability to work with others as a team to treat large and complex treatments has allowed him to continue to grow his network of referrals. Dr. Sanjukta Mohanta is a general dentist practicing in Brampton, Ontario. She graduated from the University of Waterloo in 1995 and the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Dentistry in 1999. She later became certified in adult education and was an instructor at a dental hygiene college. She currently works at a community health centre treating children and seniors on public dental programs.

Dr. Mohanta has given many presentations and has written several articles for the Ontario Dentist Journal, where she is on the Editorial Board. She is on several committees with the Ontario Dental Association (ODA) and her local dental society, Halton-Peel Dental Association, where she was president. She received the Award of Merit from the ODA and was selected to be on the Canadian Dental Association’s Future of the Profession Task Force. Dr Mohanta enjoys teaching people how to improve their oral health, mentoring colleagues, and advocating for improvements in public dental programs.

Why Occlusal Night Guards might be Detrimental to the Overall Health of your Patient

Description:

The majority of the dentists in North America were trained in dental school to place upper nightguards to stop the patient from wearing down their teeth due to clenching and grinding at night.

Research has shown that patients treated with the flat plane nightguard actually clench more and often wake up with headaches.

I prefer to fabricate the upper nightguard with only the lower incisors touching the anterior ramp and no posterior teeth touching. With no posterior contact, the patient can no longer clench. This nightguard has an incisal ramp to keep the lower jaw from falling back at night.

Learning Outcomes:

Learn how to screen all patients for TM dysfunction prior to any restorative, cosmetic or orthodontic treatment.
Understand the difference between intra-capsular issues (problems inside the TM joint) and extracapsular issues (problems outside the joint)
Learn when to use a flat plane vs a Farrari 2 nightguard.
How proper function, skeletal and occlusal issues affect the TM Joint.

Bio:

Brock Rondeau is one of North America’s most sought after speakers who lectures over 50 days per year for 35 years. He is the past president and master senior certified instructor for the International Association for Orthodontics. Over 24,000 dentists have attended his courses and study clubs in the United States, Canada, China, Australia, England, Poland, and Turkey. Certified by the World Organization of Natural Medicine, he has integrated various healthcare specialties over 54 years of clinical practice. Bio:

Dr. Scott Benjamin is an internationally recognized expert on dental lasers and advanced dental technologies. Scott is in private practice in rural upstate New York where he utilizes several different lasers of various wavelengths on an everyday basis. He has faculty appointments at several universities overseeing their laser programs and is a Past-Chair of ADEA’s Special Interest Group on Laser in Dentistry. Additionally, Dr. Benjamin is Chair the ADA Standards Committee Working Group on Dental Lasers, is an active voting member of ANSI Committee Z136 on Laser Safety that creates the American national laser safety standards and is a Past-President of the Academy of Laser Dentistry (ALD). Scott has published over 300 articles, textbook chapters, and technical reports on dental lasers and advanced dental technologies and is a member of the editorial board of several prestigious peer reviewed dental journals.

Unexplained Implant Failures: REVEALED

Description: Unfortunately Implant failures and complications do occur, and the profession needs to have expertise as to their potential etiologies. The many risk factors in this vast subject will be reviewed in a concise and organized fashion. Sometimes however the Dentist has no idea as to the etiology and this is particularly stressful for the Dentist as well as the patient. This lecture will address these “unexplained implant complications and failures” and reveal potential etiologies and especially one that has been largely ignored, that being implants direct from the manufacturer that are contaminated! Attendees will learn about the Clean Implant Foundation and belonging to the exclusive, ethical and exemplary group of “Clean Implant Certified Dentists”.

Bio:

Dr. Murray Arlin obtained his D.D.S. at McGill University in 1977 and then completed a 1-year hospital residency. He graduated from the University of Toronto with his degree in Periodontics in 1980. He earned his Royal College of Dentists of Canada designations of Membership in 1981, and Fellowship-F.R.C.D.(C) in 1983. He is a past president of the Ontario Society of Periodontists, the Ontario Society for Osseointegration and was national chairman of the Canadian Academy of Periodontology’s course. In 2024 Dr. Arlin was awarded the designation of “Fellow Member and Honorary Ambassador” for the Clean Implant Foundation. In 1980 Dr. Arlin opened his West Toronto specialty private practice limited to Periodontics and Implant Dentistry, focusing on Implant Dentistry starting in 1989. He has placed and documented 15,000 implants clinically, radiographically and statistically. Dr. Arlin has authored 54 articles on Periodontics and Implant Dentistry, notably his “career” manuscript on his 30-year results of his 15,000 Implants, in a 65-page full Journal article in “The Journal of Clinical & Practical Oral Implantology” (Dec. 2020). Dr. Arlin taught at the Undergraduate and Post Graduate levels in Periodontics at the University of Toronto, and in Periodontics and Prosthodontics at Nova South-Eastern University (Florida). Active in continuing education since 1979, Dr. Arlin has given over 500 lectures locally and internationally. He was co-founder of the Toronto Implant Study Club in 1992 (growing to be the largest private study club in Canada) and he was the sole founder of the Dental Hygienist Periodontal Study Club of Toronto. Dr. Arlin continues to be active in lecturing primarily on Implant Dentistry.

Dr. Amarjit Rihal graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1995 with a DMD degree. Amarjit’s interests in dentistry revolve around technology using various digital CAD/CAM systems. Currently, he manages his own in-house digital lab at Assiniboine Dental Group called Rihal Digital Designs.

Amarjit served as president of the Manitoba Dental Association (MDA) in 2013, and is the current president of National Dental Examination Board of Canada (NDEB). He served as the chair from the Commission of Dental Accreditation of Canada (CDAC) for six years prior.

Amarjit is an international speaker and has an interest in education. He serves as a part-time clinical and didactic instructor for the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Manitoba. He is also a fellow of the International College of Dentists (ICD), the Pierre Fauchard Academy (PFA), and the American College of General Dentists (ACGD).

Jericho Elomari with over 25 years of experience in the dental lab industry,starting as chair-side dental technician,rising to Assistant Lab Director and CAD/CAM specialist before assuming her current role as a Senior Application Engineer and lead trainer at Shining 3D team. Dr. Vageesh Sabharwal graduated from the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Dentistry with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 2001. He furthered his training in dentistry and business by attending numerous universities including the University of Minnesota, the Kellogg School of Management, the University of Tennessee, and Harvard. Dr. Sabharwal has been the President of the South Asian Dental Association (SADA), and the North Indian Medical and Dental Association of Canada (NIMDAC). He volunteered with the Ontario Dental Association on the Health Policy and Government Relations committee.
